Jaunty Jackalope Alpha 6

Well, I got antsy and decided to install the alpha 6 version of Jaunty on my Toshiba laptop to see how it was, and to make sure I could. The Intrepid version wouldn't install on this machine, so I had to do an upgrade. Luckily the upgrade was smooth. This new alpha installed right off though, and I glad because I prefer to keep my /home partition and do a fresh install of the / partition.

Jaunty Alpha 6 released

The Ubuntu developers are moving quickly to bring you the absolute latest and greatest software the Open Source Community has to offer. The Jaunty Jackalope Alpha 6 is the fifth alpha release of Ubuntu 9.04, bringing with it a number of new features to improve daily computing. This is still an alpha release. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version will be released on April 23rd, 2009.

Server Migration/ Restoration under Ubuntu.

All hardware fails eventually, and eventually everyone will have to deal with a catastrophic hardware failure. Whether through failure or the need for migration, system administrators will need at one time or another, to move to new machines or to recover files lost. This is a way, and just a beginning, for sysadmins to work more efficiently.

Choices for recovering an Ubuntu Linux machine are many, and the most popular for this restoration are: image backups, re-installation (and hopefully not having to re-build from scratch).

Plug Westside Meeting Feb 25th 2009

The Phoenix Linux Users Group (PLUG) had their Westside meeting today. I attended it like I have been for the last couple of meetings. Several members had recently gone to SCALE in California, so most of the meeting was devoted to talking about what they did there. They said that it was a great learning experience, and a great way to meet many people that use free software. Hans even gave a presentation at SCALE which he went through with us. They are planning on going back next year and invite anyone that is interested to go along with them.

We have a new "Ubuntu Member"

On Feb. 19th, 2009, our own Kenny McHenry (kennymc0) went before the Americas Regional Membership Board, and after a short question and answer session, was granted Ubuntu Membership for his outstanding contributions to the Arizona LoCo Team and the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter. We had a good turnout of team members at the Board meeting to show their support of Kenny and his bid for membership. It was great to see all the support for a fellow team member. With Kenny's acceptance, that brings the number of Arizona Team members with Ubuntu Membership to 3, and we have others who are working toward qualifying. We congratulate Kenny on his membership, and thank him for all of his outstanding work on behalf of Ubuntu, the Arizona Team, and the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter. w00t!!
